I absolutely adore this tea and try to keep it in my stash year-round. If you’re a fan of a smooth, ripe Pu-erh, this one is an excellent pick, with just enough earthy botanicals to give it depth and character. The flavor is a bit hard to put into words, but at its heart, it's a lovely shou Pu-erh, featuring botanicals like fireweed, lichen, mugwort, and mushrooms that are not "funky" or overly earthy. The blend is so well-balanced that each ingredient complements the others, creating a delightful brew without being overpowering.
This is one of my top ten teas from Friday Afternoon Tea, and my favorite in their "Mythology" collection, which rotates every autumn, along with Serpent's Garden, Underworld, and Monkey King's Journey (the latter of which, sadly, is to be discontinued).
With Hen-Legged Hut, you don’t have to worry about an overly earthy taste, as it lacks any wet pile (wet leaves) flavor. The ingredients are perfectly balanced, making the main experience a smooth, mellow, and deep ripe Pu-erh. It also pairs wonderfully with a touch of sweetener if you enjoy that. It's also extremely forgiving, so if you oversteep it, it just gets richer instead of bitter! Overall, I’d say this is a five-star tea.
I wasn't sure how I would feel about such an earthy flavor profile but I could drink this every day
I was unsure if I would like this tea because some of the flavors (like mushroom) are not ones i usually gravitate toward, but, I love Baba Yaga so gave it a go and it was wonderful! Earthy and warm and utterly pleasant! I'm not great at describing flavor, but rest assured if the mushroom part made you wary, give it a try because it is full of delight!
